How Asia Reimagines Christmas From Beachfront Feasts to Illuminated Skies

Christmas arrives in unexpected textures in Asia: not just pine trees and sleigh bells, but palm-fringed gala dinners, Spanish rooftop parties, gingerbread villages by the sea, and Tokyo nights glowing under cascading constellations of winter light. This year, hotels from Thailand to Japan to Vietnam are reimagining the season in ways entirely their own—sometimes tropical, sometimes traditional, always deeply atmospheric.

Below, The Asian Diaries explores how destinations across the region are celebrating, dining and designing their way into the holidays.

A Tropical Christmas on Koh Samui

At Banyan Tree Samui, Christmas unfolds beside the Gulf of Thailand, where the sea turns a vivid sapphire at dusk. The resort’s three restaurants each build their own festive universe.

At The Edge, the celebrations begin with a Christmas Eve Gala Dinner featuring an oyster bar, seafood market, carving station, salad bar and live music from 7 p.m. Over at Saffron—a MICHELIN-recognized dining room—guests embark on a 5-course culinary journey from December 24–26, where contemporary Thai flavours meet holiday tradition in a quiet, refined space.

But the most quintessentially Thai Christmas happens Beachside, where a crescent of white sand glows by candlelight. Chef Rainer crafts a festive menu of slow-roasted butterball turkey, Alaskan snowfish and grilled tiger prawns, served as a 3-course lunch or 5-course dinner from December 24–26.

Christmas, in this corner of Samui, is all tide, breeze and barely-there winter.

A Tokyo Christmas Illuminated

At Palace Hotel Tokyo, the holiday season is about glow—both indoors and across the cityscape. Its ‘A Tokyo Christmas’ package is a celebration of refined indulgence: a two-night stay (Premier Suite or Executive Suite), Club Lounge access, afternoon tea, in-room breakfast, a 5.9-foot Christmas tree adorned with lights, Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé Brut, Christmas cookies and a jewel-box cake crafted at Sweets & Deli.

Guests also enjoy a Christmas dinner at Grand Kitchen and may book a private four-hour chauffeured tour of Tokyo’s famed winter illuminations.

Rates for the experience begin at JPY 941,000 for stays between December 20–25, 2025—an invitation to see the city at its brightest.

A Vietnam Christmas: From Tofurkey to Turkey

At TIA Wellness Resort, December leans sweet, serene and flexible. A Christmas-inspired afternoon tea is offered from December 1–26 with eggnog cupcakes, Christmas scones, turkey sandwiches with cranberries and red cabbage, and more—paired with champagne or Ronnefeldt tea (VND 1,600,000++ for two).

Their Christmas Eve feast, Ray of Christmas, offers a six-course menu in both plant-based and traditional versions, accompanied by live piano music. Prices begin at VND 1,600,000++ for the vegan menu and VND 2,050,000++ for the regular version.

Festive Indulgence on the Andaman Coast

In Krabi, Banyan Tree Krabi—recently named the “Finest Hotel in Thailand” by Fodor’s and honoured with Two MICHELIN Keys—elevates Christmas to a spectacle.

The Christmas Eve Gala Dinner at The Naga Kitchen is a lavish buffet with live music and a fire show. Highlights include truffle risotto, a carving station, seabass and prawn ceviche, lobster bisque, smoked salmon, sushi and sashimi, and an ice station brimming with oysters, lobster, green-lip mussels, scallops and more.

On Christmas Day, a six-course dinner continues the celebrations with refined holiday flavours and gentle tradition woven throughout.

A Gingerbread Christmas in Cam Ranh

At Alma Resort, the holidays are built—not just imagined. A gingerbread village rises inside the Alma Food Court, where children wander edible landscapes while parents take photos.

A Christmas tree lighting on December 13 fills the lobby with thousands of lights, festive cocktails and carols. Families can bring home decorated Christmas trees from Alma Mart, while the Kids’ Club hosts a daily advent calendar activity.

Santa arrives from December 23–25, and from December 20–30, traditional mulled wine infuses the resort with the scent of cloves and nostalgia.

Beats, Baubles and Spanish Flair in Chiang Mai

Meliá Chiang Mai finds its holiday personality somewhere between cosy and cosmopolitan.

From December 1 to January 31, Merry Mulled Melodies at Ruen Kaew Lounge fills the evenings with mulled wine and live music. Tea & Tinsel Afternoon Tea at Mai Restaurant & Bar pairs Japanese-inspired treats with sparkling wine and panoramic city views.

Madrid-born Chef Juan Ignacio García Racionero leads the Spanish Gastronomy Series from December 1–5.

Christmas Eve brings a buffet at Laan Na Kitchen—think roasted turkey, honey-glazed ham, sashimi, poke bowls and handcrafted desserts—followed by the ‘Beats & Baubles’ rooftop party with DJs, cocktails and skyline magic.

Caroling, Charity and Candlelight in Hong Kong

At The Hari Hong Kong, Christmas carries a philanthropic twist.

On December 4, the hotel transforms its entrance into a Christmas market staffed by members of the Hong Chi Association, which supports people with intellectual disabilities. Every dollar raised goes directly to their programs.

A tree-lighting ceremony takes place at 5:15 p.m., followed by carols.

The ‘Festive Elegance at The Hari’ package (Dec 22, 2025–Jan 2, 2026) includes a luxury room or suite, HKD 500 dining credit, breakfast for two, exclusive 5th anniversary gifts, in-room chocolate muffin Christmas tree, and 15% off festive menus at Lucciola, Zoku, The Lounge and The Terrace.

Spanish Celebrations in the Bangkok Sky

INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit brings Madrid to the Thai capital with its “Feliz Festiva” program.

At LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar on the 33rd and 34th floors, a rotating weekly festive menu (Dec 1–30) features Iberian jamón croquettes with caviar, Spanish red prawn carpaccio, seabass with porcini, beef oxtail cannelloni with foie gras, and almond–nougat custard. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day menus run from 4 p.m. to midnight.

At The Kites Eatery, a Christmas Eve buffet includes sashimi, seafood on ice, BBQ meats, a carving station and a chocolate fountain—with optional free-flow drinks.

Christmas in Mui Ne & Cam Ranh

Both properties of The Anam—in Cam Ranh and Mui Ne—celebrate with feasts and illuminating traditions.

At The Anam Cam Ranh, December brings Festive Afternoon Tea, Champagne & Caviar Soirées, a tree lighting on December 22, and two Christmas Eve dining options: a nine-course feast at The Colonial Restaurant or a roasted buffet at The Indochine with live music and a fire show.

The Anam Mui Ne hosts its tree lighting on December 23, with Santa visits, a BBQ buffet at The Indochine, a lavish four-course dinner at Lang Viet, and a Kids’ Club painting activity on Christmas Day.

Christmas Across Southern & Central Vietnam

Azerai Resorts celebrates the season with intimate, family-centric experiences.

At Azerai Ke Ga Bay, Christmas morning begins with breakfast and Virgin Bloody Marys before Santa arrives with gifts. A Western set-menu dinner on the oceanfront terrace is limited to only six tables.

At Azerai La Residence, Hue, guests receive complimentary limousine transfers to Phu Cam Cathedral for Christmas Mass, followed by a tea buffet, calligraphy class and children’s arts workshop guided by Hue master Mr. Ke.

A Luminescent Dreamscape in Hanoi

The iconic Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi turns into a “Luminescent Dreamscape,” with millions of lights cascading across balconies, courtyards and historic corridors.

The first-ever Metropole Christmas Fair (Nov 28–30) features Metropole-made specialties, local artisans, handicrafts, gourmet bites, eggnog and mulled wine. The season begins officially with the annual lighting of the hotel’s famed 15-meter Christmas tree.

Wellness-Inspired Holidays Across Vietnam

Fusion properties across Vietnam and Thailand elevate the season with spa-led fêtes and comforting rituals.

At Fusion Resort & Villas Da Nang, beachfront BBQs, a Christmas Eve buffet and a refined Christmas Day feast headline the celebrations.

At Alba Wellness Valley by Fusion in Hue, mineral hot springs, Japanese onsen rituals and a semi-buffet dinner at Madame Chau Restaurant create a restorative retreat.

In Ho Chi Minh City, Fusion Suites Saigon hosts “Fusion Sleighs LIVE,” with music, canapés, candy games, Santa visits and a festive buffet.
