For travellers arriving at The Anam’s resorts in Vietnam, greenery is an essential part of the experience. Tropical gardens, trees and landscaped spaces have long helped define the properties. Now, The Anam Group wants to extend that philosophy well beyond its resort grounds.

The Anam Foundation has committed VND 1 billion annually to a long-term tree-planting initiative aimed not simply at increasing the number of trees in Vietnam, but at putting them where they can make the greatest difference to everyday life.

Called “Anam Green Life,” the program will focus on schools, public spaces and neighbourhoods where greenery is limited, working with local authorities to identify locations where new trees can provide shade, improve air quality, cool public spaces and make communities more attractive and liveable.

It is a deliberately people-centred approach to environmental action. Rather than concentrating primarily on carbon offsets or large-scale planting in remote areas, the Foundation intends to measure the value of a tree partly by what it can do for the people living around it.

“We won’t be simply planting trees wherever space is available,” said The Anam Group founder and chairman Mr Pham Van Hien. “We want to, rather, plant them where they will genuinely improve people’s daily lives; whether that’s providing shade for children in a school playground, creating cooler public spaces or helping make neighbourhoods healthier and more attractive.”

The first projects will take place in communities surrounding The Anam Cam Ranh and The Anam Mui Ne before the program expands into other parts of Vietnam.

“Nature has always been at the heart of The Anam,” Hien said.

“Our resorts are defined by lush tropical gardens because we believe greenery contributes to beauty and wellbeing. Through this initiative we want to extend that philosophy beyond our resorts and into the communities around us.”

From Trees to Homes

The commitment is also part of a broader effort by The Anam Foundation to address practical needs in the communities surrounding the group’s properties.

Last month, the Foundation completed and donated two homes for disadvantaged families in Cam Lam, near The Anam Cam Ranh.

One belonged to Mrs Truong Thi Loi of Lap Dinh Village, who had lived alone for years in a deteriorating house increasingly vulnerable to heavy rain, strong winds and flooding. The Foundation contributed VND 90 million to renovate the property, creating a safer, more secure, spacious and comfortable home.

Another VND 150 million was contributed toward building a new home for Mr Nguyen Thanh Nhan, a technical employee at The Anam Cam Ranh. Nhan has been raising four young children alone following the death of his wife, with the family previously living in a cramped and deteriorating house.

“Whether we’re helping a family have a safe place to call home or planting trees that will provide lasting benefits for entire communities, our goal is the same – to create impactful change,” Hien said. “These initiatives are driven by our vision of supporting people and their communities as well as caring for the environment.”

Building Sustainability Into the Bigger Picture

The new tree-planting program adds another layer to environmental measures already being undertaken across The Anam Group.

Those initiatives include extensive tropical landscaping, rainwater collection, reductions in single-use plastics, solar power and other environmentally responsible operating practices intended to reduce the resorts’ environmental footprint.

The Anam Group also contributes a percentage of its annual profits to The Anam Foundation, creating an ongoing funding source for community development, environmental projects, disaster relief, staff welfare and other charitable programs.

The VND 1 billion annual commitment behind Anam Green Life gives that work a particularly visible form. A tree planted beside a school playground or along a neighbourhood street may be a relatively simple intervention, but its impact can continue for decades.

For The Anam Foundation, that longevity is precisely the point. Its greener vision for Vietnam isn’t confined to the landscapes visitors see from their resort rooms. Increasingly, it is about the communities just beyond them.
